HMPV Testing Not Mandatory For Patients With Fever Or Cough, Says Karnataka Health Officials
The Karnataka Health Department has clarified that testing for the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is not mandatory for those visiting hospitals in the state. The department has also announced plans to monitor private labs and hospitals closely, ensuring they do not insist on unnecessary HMPV testing.
According to officials, patients presenting with symptoms such as fever and cough are not required to undergo HMPV testing. Sources further stated that the Health Department will release an official notification on this matter by Wednesday evening.

Expensive HMPV Tests in Private Hospitals
Reports indicate that private hospitals charge between ₹10,000 and ₹12,000 for HMPV tests. To address this, the Health Department is set to issue guidelines emphasizing that such tests are unnecessary in most cases, thus preventing undue financial burden on patients.
Not a Dangerous Virus
The Health Department has reassured the public that HMPV is not a dangerous virus. Commonly observed during winter, the virus does not warrant widespread testing, and even government hospitals have not made HMPV testing a routine practice.
Officials also clarified that the virus detected in Karnataka is not linked to the strain recently reported in China. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has held discussions with health officials, reiterating that there is no cause for public alarm.
Cases in Karnataka and Beyond
Thus far, Karnataka has reported two cases of HMPV, one in Bengaluru and another in Shivamogga. Both cases involved children who have since fully recovered. Nationwide, ten HMPV cases have been reported: two each in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra; one in Gujarat; and three in Kolkata.
The Health Department advises the public to remain calm, take necessary precautions, and focus on maintaining good health to prevent infection.
