Hesaraghatta Lake To The Rescue? Bengaluru Looks At Backup Water Source In May
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) plans to extract water from the Hesaraghatta lake on the city's outskirts to cater to its water requirements, according to DH reports. The project's commencement depends on the demand in May. BWSSB chairman Ramprasath Manohar V, after inspecting the Hesaraghatta lake, stated that the lake currently holds 0.3 tmcft of water, with healthy groundwater levels in the surrounding area. This resource is sufficient to pump 10 MLD of water.
Manohar highlighted the presence of a BWSSB pumping station at Hesaraghatta that could be utilized for water extraction, ensuring a supply through the pumping network to areas linked to the station. Additionally, water supply will be guaranteed to other locations and through water tankers.

Despite officials being instructed to be prepared, Manohar emphasized that water will only be pumped if there is a shortage in May. He emphasized, "Our goal is to prevent any water scarcity in Bengaluru, even during May."
Long-Term Water Management Plans
Ramprasath Manohar V stressed the need to remove encroachments from the Arkavathi and Vrishabhavathi valleys to revive them, thereby enhancing water management. He launched the 'Triple R' campaign, aimed at making Bengaluru water surplus by July 2026. The campaign focuses on reviving the Arkavathi and Vrishabhavathi rivers, recharging the ground with rainwater, and restoring 185 lakes in the city.
BWSSB encourages Bengaluru residents to adopt effective rainwater harvesting techniques, allowing excess water to seep into the ground through recharge pits. Those practicing rainwater harvesting will be recognized as 'Proud Bengalureans,' aiming to motivate citizens to conserve water. Manohar noted, "We have already initiated lake rejuvenation measures, including filling some lakes with treated water. These efforts are expected to yield positive outcomes."
