Heavy Goods Vehicles Banned During Peak Saturday Hours In Bengaluru: A Win-Win For Commuters And Operators
The Bengaluru traffic police has announced a new set of restrictions for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to alleviate traffic congestion on Saturdays. From August 3, 2024, HGVs will be prohibited from 10 am to 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 9 pm on Saturdays. This decision comes after an extensive analysis of traffic patterns from January 1 to June 30, 2024.

According to MN Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), the new timings are designed to better suit Saturdays, when peak hours typically start in the afternoon. The aim is to reduce traffic congestion during these peak hours, ensuring smoother flow for regular commuters and reducing the strain on the city's traffic infrastructure.
However, some truck drivers and vehicle owners have expressed concerns about the inconvenience caused by the new regulations. They believe that banning heavy vehicles may not be an effective way to reduce traffic congestion.
The new regulation aims to balance the needs of heavy vehicle operators with the necessity of managing urban traffic congestion. The existing rule prohibiting the movement of HGVs between 7 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 10 pm on weekdays will still remain in effect.
The authorities expect these measures to bring significant improvements to the city's traffic flow, particularly during the busiest times of the day. The move is expected to provide some relief to commuters and enhance overall road safety. The traffic police will continue to monitor the situation and make further adjustments as necessary to ensure optimal traffic management.
