Haveri Gang Rape Accused Re-Arrested for Holding ‘Victory Rally’ Post Bail, Sparks Outrage Across Karnataka
Haveri Rape Case: In a shocking twist to a deeply disturbing case, the seven prime accused in the Hanagal gang rape case have been re-arrested after a celebratory "victory" rally following their release on bail triggered massive public outrage across Karnataka. The accused have been arrested for violating bail conditions. An FIR has been filed and three accused still absconding.
The accused, who were granted bail by the Haveri Additional District and Sessions Court on Tuesday, were seen parading through Akki Alur town in Haveri district in a convoy of cars and bikes, waving from sunroofs and raising slogans. The viral video, now circulating widely on social media, shows the accused being cheered by supporters-an act that has left citizens, activists, and leaders furious.

Visuals Spark Nationwide Backlash
In the viral clip, several of the accused-including Mohammad Sadiq Agasimani, Shoib Mulla, Tausip Choti, Samiwulla Lalanavar, Aftab Chandanakatti, Madar Saab Mandakki, and Riyaz Savikeri-are seen enjoying the rally as if celebrating an acquittal, rather than facing grave charges of gang rape. The public display of bravado led to criticism that law and order had collapsed in the state, prompting swift action from authorities.
The Hanagal Gang Rape Case: A Recap
The case dates back to January 2024, when an interfaith couple was attacked in a Haveri hotel room by a mob of 19 men. The couple was reportedly dragged out, with the 26-year-old woman taken to a nearby jungle and allegedly gang raped. Initially, the FIR did not include gang rape charges and was treated as a case of moral policing.
However, following the survivor's detailed statement under CrPC Section 164, the police amended the FIR to include gang rape charges. All 19 accused were arrested-12 for abetment and assault, and 7 as the main perpetrators.
Why Were the Accused Granted Bail?
After multiple rejections, the court granted bail to the seven key accused reportedly because the survivor failed to identify them in court. Public Prosecutor Vijaykumar Patil confirmed that the survivor's inability to confirm their identities, and her deviation from earlier statements, contributed to the court's decision.
Public Pressure Forces Police to Act Again
After the rally video went viral, pressure mounted on the police and state administration. Calls for justice echoed across social media, with many demanding accountability and strict action. In response, the Haveri police re-arrested the accused, citing violation of bail terms and potential disruption of public order.
