The Karnataka police department has come under scrutiny after videos circulating on social media claimed to depict inappropriate conduct involving DGP Dr K. Ramachandra Rao inside an office setting. According to reports, the officer seen in the circulating footage is serving as Director General of Police at the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE). Authorities have not confirmed the origin, timing, or authenticity of the videos, which began circulating widely on social media around January 19, 2026.

Officials have emphasised that no official findings have been reached, and the matter remains under examination.

DGP Denies Allegations, Claims AI Fabrication

Dr Ramachandra Rao has denied all allegations, stating that the videos are digitally manipulated using artificial intelligence (AI) to harm his reputation.

Speaking to reporters, he said he was shocked by the circulation of the clips and would consult his advocate to pursue legal remedies. Rao also claimed the footage being circulated was old and unrelated to his current posting.

Government Response

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the government would investigate the matter thoroughly.
"Disciplinary action will be initiated if wrongdoing is established. No one is above the law," he said.

Reports also indicated that Rao attempted to meet Home Minister G Parameshwara to present his explanation, though the meeting did not take place.

Karnataka Minister for Women and Child Development Laxmi Hebbalkar stated that appropriate action would be taken if misconduct is confirmed, irrespective of rank.

Background

Dr K. Ramachandra Rao is a 1993-batch IPS officer currently serving as DGP of the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement. He has held several senior positions in the Karnataka police.

He is also the stepfather of actor Ranya Rao, who is facing legal proceedings in an unrelated gold smuggling case. Officials have clarified that the current matter and previous cases are separate.

At present, no misconduct has been officially established against Dr Ramachandra Rao. Authorities are examining the claims, including the allegation of AI fabrication, before taking any further steps.
