Daytime Trains Between Bengaluru-Mangaluru Cancelled For 5 Months From June 1. Here's Why

Several popular daytime train services operating between Bengaluru and Mangaluru are set to be temporarily suspended for over five months starting from 1 June, as Indian Railways commences a vital electrification project along the Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road section, the South Western Railway (SWR) announced on Saturday.

As per the official notification, this major suspension - which will last 154 days - is essential to ensure the smooth progress of electrification work in the ghat section, a crucial corridor connecting Karnataka's coastal and interior regions.

These services are widely relied upon by daily commuters, office workers, and tourists travelling between the coastal city and Karnataka's capital.

The sudden and extended cancellations have led to significant concern among railway passengers, travel associations, and civic bodies.

Many have criticised the move, citing a lack of prior consultation and coordination before the announcement.

SWR, however, has defended the decision, stating that electrifying the Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya stretch is a critical infrastructure upgrade that will result in more efficient, faster, and environmentally friendly rail services in the future.

The electrification project is part of Indian Railways' larger initiative aimed at reducing reliance on diesel-powered locomotives, cutting emissions, and improving overall operational efficiency for both passenger and freight trains across the country.
