The foundation stone for Bengaluru's proposed 80,000-capacity international cricket stadium at Surya City near Bommasandra will be laid on May 23 by Siddaramaiah, marking the formal launch of one of Karnataka's biggest sports infrastructure projects.

The new stadium will come up at Suryanagar 4th Phase in Anekal taluk on the southeastern outskirts of Bengaluru, close to Electronics City, Bommasandra and the Hosur Road corridor. Once completed, the government expects it to become the second-largest cricket stadium in India.

The Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) has invited tenders for the project, estimated at Rs 943.46 crore. The stadium will be developed under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC Mode 1) turnkey model through a two-bid system on the Karnataka Public Procurement Portal.

The first phase of the project, estimated at nearly Rs 950 crore, will focus on construction of the main stadium, internal infrastructure, connecting roads and allied works. Officials said the first phase has been targeted for completion within three years.

The Karnataka Cabinet approved the project in October 2025 following the stampede near M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru IPL celebrations in June 2025, where 11 people lost their lives. Following the incident, the state explored plans for larger stadium infrastructure outside central Bengaluru to improve crowd management, traffic movement, parking access and emergency response systems.

The Anekal project was selected from among three proposed locations, including Shivaram Karanth Layout in north Bengaluru and the Bidadi Integrated Township.

According to project documents, the stadium will spread across 1,08,963 square metres, while the total built-up area including the podium structure will cover 1,21,713 square metres.

The seating plan includes 76,200 general admission seats, 2,000 VIP seats, 1,000 VVIP seats and 800 wheelchair and companion seating positions.

Officials said the stadium is being designed as a multi-use venue capable of hosting international and domestic cricket matches, concerts, ceremonies and entertainment events throughout the year.

Design documents show the seating bowl concept has drawn inspiration from projects developed by structural engineering firm Walter P Moore, including Tigres Stadium in Mexico, AT&T Stadium in Texas and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The facade of the stadium is also planned as an architectural feature reflecting Karnataka's cultural identity and cricketing heritage. Plans further include a dedicated Hall of Fame celebrating iconic players and memorable cricket moments.

The second phase of the project will include an indoor sports arena, aquatic centre, convention centre and outdoor sports facilities.

Officials believe the new venue near Bommasandra and Electronics City could help transform Bengaluru into a year-round sports and entertainment hub while reducing pressure on existing stadium infrastructure in the city centre.
