COVID Cases Rise in Karnataka: 9-Month-Old Tests Positive in Bengaluru’s Hoskote; 33 Infections Reported in Ma

The coronavirus, which once led to an unprecedented global lockdown, is once again resurfacing in some parts of the world. The emergence of a new variant, JN.1, has raised fresh concerns, particularly in regions like Singapore and Hong Kong. Now, signs of a slow increase in cases are being seen in Karnataka, especially during the month of May.

According to health department data, three cases were reported in January, followed by one case in February. March and April each saw three cases as well. However, in May alone, 33 cases have already been detected - and the month is not over yet.

Among the new cases, a 9-month-old baby from Hoskote in Bengaluru Rural district has tested positive for the virus. The child, who was initially receiving treatment at a private hospital, has since been shifted to Vani Vilas Hospital in Bengaluru for continued care.

Currently, Karnataka has 16 active COVID-19 cases.

On a national level, India has 257 active COVID-19 cases. The majority of those infected are experiencing mild symptoms and do not require hospitalization. In light of this, the Union Health Ministry has urged the public not to panic, but to remain vigilant.

Hospitals across Karnataka have been instructed to closely monitor cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and acute respiratory infections (ARI), which could signal early outbreaks.

Although the virus is reappearing in small numbers, experts say it is not spreading at a pandemic scale.

"There's no need for alarm," said Dr. Mohan of K.C. General Hospital. "But wearing a mask, maintaining social distance, and sanitizing hands in crowded places is still a wise precaution."
