Coorg Bandh On December 12: Kodagu Shuts Down For Six Hours, Here’s Why
The Kodagu Sarva Jananga Okkoota, a coalition of community organizations, has announced a Coorg bandh (shutdown) scheduled for December 12, from 6 a.m. to 12 noon, in response to lawyer K.R. Vidyadhar's alleged disrespectful remarks regarding Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and General K.S. Thimayya. The federation is urging local authorities to impose a six-month ban on Vidyadhar's presence in the district as a preventive measure against similar incidents.
During a press conference held in Madikeri, Rajeev Bopaiah, the convenor of the Okkoota, highlighted the urgency of implementing strict measures to avoid the recurrence of such offensive behavior. He demanded a prompt and resolute reaction to the lawyer's remarks, which have deeply offended the sentiments of the local populace. This initiative has attracted substantial backing from various community members, including auto drivers, merchants, and business proprietors. A coalition of 29 community organizations has joined forces to support the bandh, emphasizing the rising discontent surrounding Vidyadhar's alleged statements.

The issue first gained traction on November 22, when Vidyadhar was apprehended by the Kodagu police late at night following a social media post in which he purportedly made derogatory comments about the two esteemed military leaders. He was subsequently presented before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court in Madikeri, where government prosecutors voiced objections to his bail. Despite the opposition, Vidyadhar was granted conditional bail and released later that evening, which fueled further outrage among the residents.
Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimayya are cherished figures in Kodagu, remembered for their notable military service, and their legacy is a source of great pride for the community. The comments made by Vidyadhar have sparked widespread indignation, with community members demanding accountability to safeguard the district's honor and values. The situation remains fluid as the Okkoota and other local entities escalate their calls for justice.
