Channapatna By-election: Will Cash-For-Votes Influence Outcome In Karnataka’s ‘Toy City’?
Voters in Karnataka are set to decide the future of three key assembly seats on Wednesday as Channapatna, Shiggaon, and Sandur constituencies gear up for bypolls. Among these, Channapatna, Channapatna, some 60 kilometres from Bengaluru city stands out as the most high-stakes contest, with over 700,000 eligible voters across 770 polling stations. In this race, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, the son of former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, faces off against Congress candidate CP Yogeshwara.
A Fight Over Prestige and Power

The by-election in Channapatna, Karnataka's famous toy city, has taken a dramatic turn, with reports of a flood of cash and liquor infiltrating the constituency, fueling accusations of vote-buying and influencing the outcome.
The Election Commission has reported that nearly 2.95 lakh litres of liquor, valued at approximately Rs 29.08 crore, has been seized in just 27 days (October 16-November 11) in Channapatna. For context, this is roughly equivalent to the amount of alcohol confiscated from 77 constituencies during the 2023 Assembly elections.
This figure sheds light on the level of resources being mobilised in the constituency and hints at the intensity of the battle between the two major contenders.
CP Yogeshwara, representing Congress, is going head-to-head with Nikhil Kumaraswamy, the NDA candidate, with both sides reportedly employing significant tactics to sway voters in their favor.
The flood of liquor and allegations of cash for votes have added an extra layer of controversy to an already heated contest.
In the 2023 Assembly elections, the total liquor seizure in Karnataka amounted to 22.27 lakh litres worth Rs 83.66 crore, with an average of Rs 37.34 lakh per constituency. The seizure in Channapatna, however, signals a far larger scale of political maneuvering, indicating just how critical this by-election is, not only for the candidates involved but for their political patrons as well.
The Politics of 'Revenge'
It must be noted that for the ruling Congress, the Channapatna by-election is more than just a contest of political will-it is a chance to avenge the defeat suffered in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. During the national polls, the BJP-JD(S) alliance handed a humiliating defeat to Congress, especially to Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and his brother DK Suresh, who lost to Dr. CN Manjunath, Kumaraswamy's brother-in-law, on a BJP ticket.
The sting of that loss has lingered, and now, with this by-election, Shivakumar sees an opportunity for redemption. The Congress party, with Shivakumar at the helm, is looking to wrest control of Channapatna, a seat previously vacated by Kumaraswamy after he was elected to the Lok Sabha and appointed Union Minister in the Modi Cabinet. In the 2023 Assembly elections, Kumaraswamy narrowly defeated Yogeshwara by a mere 15,000 votes, making this bypoll an even more intense battle.
This contest also highlights the shifting dynamics within Karnataka's political landscape. Despite their past rivalry, Kumaraswamy and Yogeshwara found themselves in a temporary alliance after the BJP-JD(S) collaboration for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, with the political tides changing, the two now face off once again for supremacy in Channapatna, a seat that has become a symbol of prestige for both the JD(S) and Congress.
Challenges of Vote-Buying Allegations
The election has become more than just a political clash. It has raised serious concerns about the influence of money in the democratic process, particularly with reports of large sums of money and other incentives being used to sway voters.
Political analysts suggest that the heavy influx of cash for votes could tilt the balance in such a closely contested constituency, but it is unclear whether this will significantly impact voter behavior.
Sources indicate that political parties are going to extraordinary lengths to win over the electorate, with reports of gold coins, cash payments of Rs 1,000 or more, and even livestock being distributed to entice voters. One party allegedly gave away full chickens to voters, while another opted for dressed chickens in an attempt to sway votes.
In a constituency that has seen heavy political campaigning and strategic alliances, some observers believe that the sheer flow of money could drown out other factors, such as the candidates' political agendas and promises. Still, others argue that voters in Channapatna are well aware of the situation and are likely to make their decision based on factors other than monetary incentives.
A Critical Turning Point
With Election Day fast approaching, Channapatna stands as a battleground of immense political importance. For the Congress, this by-election is not only a contest of influence but a chance to settle old scores and regain lost ground. For the JD(S) and Kumaraswamy, it represents a chance to prove their dominance and preserve their hold over the region.
As the voting process unfolds, one thing is clear: the Channapatna by-election is more than just a local contest; it is a fight for political survival and relevance, with the power of money casting a long shadow over the democratic process. The results of this race will likely shape the course of Karnataka's political future, and the tactics used by both parties will set the tone for elections to come.
