BWSSB Mandates Aerators In Public Places By This Date

To curb unnecessary water wastage, cash-strapped Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has mandated the installation of aerators in taps at commercial shops, industries, apartments, luxury hotels, restaurants, and public places. According to BWSSB Chairman V Ram Prasath Manohar, these aerators, available at a low cost in the market, and can significantly reduce water bills.

Addressing office bearers of the Bangalore City Plumbers Association, Manohar stated, "A large amount of water is wasted from faucets without aerators. Installing aerators in these faucets can save 60 to 85 percent of water." He also highlighted that installing aerators is a simple process that people can do themselves, with the option to seek help from plumbers if needed.

BWSSB Mandates Aerators In Public Places By This Date

The deadline for voluntary installation of aerators is from March 21 to March 31. Within this period, individuals should procure and fit the aerators to their faucets. For buildings that fail to comply, the BWSSB will arrange for licensed plumbers to install the aerators, with the building owner bearing the cost.

Manohar appealed to the public to install aerators in all areas where water is unnecessarily used, such as handwashing areas, dishwashing sinks, showers, and washbasins. These devices, starting from Rs. 60, can significantly reduce water consumption and, consequently, water bills.

He also called for trained plumbers to raise awareness among building owners about the benefits of aerator installation and to ensure future compliance. He emphasized that installing high-quality aerators is mandatory in commercial shops, industries, apartments, luxury hotels, restaurants, and public places.

What is Aerators?

A faucet aerator, commonly known as a tap aerator, is typically located at the end of modern indoor water faucets. These devices can be easily screwed onto the faucet head, producing a steady stream of water that is less prone to splashing. Aerators often mix water with air, reducing water usage without compromising water pressure. The aerator was invented by Greek engineer Elie Aghnides.
