#BoycottMetro Trends as BJP MP Takes on Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike
In Bengaluru, people are upset about a recent increase in metro fares, leading to the trend of #BoycottMetro. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya criticised the fare hike, saying it burdens the middle class. He raised concerns in Parliament, pointing out that ticket prices for short distances have doubled, making Bengaluru's metro the priciest in the country.

Surya compared fares, noting that while Delhi commuters pay Rs 30 for a 12 km journey, Bengaluru travelers must pay Rs 60, which he deemed unfair. He met with the Union Minister to discuss these issues and asked for a review of the fare system.
At the Zero Hour in Parliament today, I spoke on how the hike in Metro Prices is affecting the middle class in Bengaluru.

Highlighted how this fare hike has led to a 100% increase in the short-distance commute across several metro stations in Bengaluru, making Bengaluru Metro… pic.twitter.com/3atGsaYvB5
The fare hikes started on February 9, with prices rising by up to 50%. The new fare system has set various price points depending on distance, with the maximum fare going from Rs 60 to Rs 90. Some commuters are reporting fewer riders on the metro, especially during rush hours, and many students who used to depend on it are now finding it too expensive.
Social media has seen calls to boycott the metro, as people argue higher fares will lead to more private vehicle use, increasing traffic and pollution. Despite discounts for smart card users, many commuters feel that metro travel is now too costly.
#RevokeMetroFareHike started trending on X.
This 70% hike in metro fares is completely unjust.

On Monday, during office rush hours, I have never seen so many empty seats in the Bangalore Metro. In fact no school students were present in the metro due to the price hike.#RevokeMetroFareHike https://t.co/q7nWtNT8tT pic.twitter.com/4zULdaQr9P
