Bengaluru's Peenya Flyover Restrictions: Heavy Vehicle Ban Extended For 18 Months
Cable installation work is currently underway on the 4.2 km long Peenya flyover in Bengaluru along the Tumkuru road, and now, another shocking update has emerged for those expecting full permission for heavy vehicle (Buses and trucks) movement soon. Initially, following the flyover's cable repair, heavy vehicles were allowed to operate only four days a week, with restrictions on Fridays and Saturdays. However, the traffic police have now dealt another blow to motorists hoping for an end to this ban. Currently, heavy vehicles are prohibited on the Peenya Flyover from Friday evening to Saturday morning, and authorities are set to extend this restriction for another year and a half.
So far, 240 cables have been installed between all the pillars on the flyover, with two cables per pillar. In the second phase, 1,200 cables have been replaced between two pillars, with 10 cables each. A total of 300 cables have already been installed. However, completing the remaining cable work is expected to take another 18 months. Once the installation is finished, full vehicular movement will be permitted only after experts from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) inspect the structure and submit a safety report.

Motorists are increasingly frustrated by frequent traffic jams on the flyover and have criticized the government for failing to resolve the congestion despite multiple interventions. Many argue that although the flyover has been repaired, it continues to create new challenges, and they are demanding a thorough quality inspection.
The 15-metre-wide, 4.2-km-long flyover on the arterial Tumakuru road that has been shut for buses and trucks faces persistent issues daily. Accidents and traffic congestion have already caused significant inconvenience, and now, with the extension of restrictions, motorists are left wondering when they will finally get relief from the ongoing traffic woes.
