Bengaluru's Central Silk Board Junction To Breathe Easy: BMRCL Aims At 50-Hour Concrete Pouring Record

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is making significant strides towards improving traffic flow at the notoriously congested Central Silk Board (CSB) junction. This project will see the complete removal of traffic signals at the junction, with a key milestone being the first-of-its-kind 50-hour continuous concrete pouring and slab construction for the flyover ramp.

A massive 2,520 cubic meters of concrete will be used to create a solid slab for the ramp. This ambitious undertaking is scheduled to begin on Thursday. The project's complexity is further emphasized by the sheer volume of materials involved:

CSB Junction Makeover
  • 245 tonnes of steel
  • 225 high tensile steel strands
  • 11,074 high density polyethylene pipes

Over the past two months, a dedicated team of 10,100 laborers has been diligently working on the ramp construction. Given the high traffic volume at CSB junction [CSB junction is the link between BMRCL's Phase-2A line which runs from CSB to KR Pura station (Outer Ring Road Line) and Yellow Line (RV Road to Bommasandra)] , close collaboration with the traffic police is essential to ensure smooth operation and minimise disruption.

To alleviate congestion, a road flyover, along with five loops and ramps spanning 3 km, has been constructed at the CSB Junction.

These include:

  • Ramp A: Ragigudda to Hosur Road
  • Ramp C: From Ragigudda towards KR Puram
  • Ramp D: From HSR Layout towards Ragigudda
  • Ramp B: Connecting the ground level of BTM Layout to the first level flyover road of Ramp A
  • Ramp E: Connecting the first level of Ramp D to the ground level of BTM Layout

"A total of 2,520 cubic meters of solid slab has been placed on the ramp, which is 124 meters long, 15.1 meters wide, and 1.8 meters deep. This required 245 tonnes of steel, 225 high tensile steel strands, and 11,074 high-density polyethylene pipes," Deputy Chief Engineer, Outer Ring Road (ORR) Line, BMRCL, N Sadashiva told TNIE.
