Bengaluru Water Cut Alert: BWSSB Announces One-Day Water Shutdown Due to Cauvery 5th Stage Repairs

Several parts of Bengaluru will experience a disruption in drinking water supply on December 17 as the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) undertakes emergency repair work on the Cauvery 5th stage water supply network. The shutdown is required to fix a major pipeline leak, officials said.

BWSSB chairperson Dr. V. Ram Prasath Manohar stated that a serious leak has been detected on a 3,000 mm diameter transmission pipeline that carries treated Cauvery water to the city. The issue has been traced to a damaged scour valve, which has resulted in water loss and pressure fluctuations in downstream areas.

To safely carry out repairs, BWSSB will stop Cauvery 5th stage water supply from 7 am to 10 pm on December 17. Officials said the temporary suspension is necessary to prevent further infrastructure damage and to ensure stable water distribution once the repairs are completed.

According to BWSSB, the damaged pipeline is a critical link in the Cauvery 5th stage system, and addressing the leak is essential for maintaining long-term supply reliability. While the repair work will cause a one-day interruption, the agency said it is being treated as an urgent measure to avoid larger disruptions in the future.

Areas Affected by the Water Supply Cut

A large number of localities across north, east, south and south-west Bengaluru, as well as the Varthur-Whitefield belt, will face a complete halt in Cauvery 5th stage water supply during the shutdown.

Affected areas include Ananthapura, Doddabettahalli, Chikkabettahalli, Harohalli, Manchenahalli, Kattigenahalli, Srinivasapura, Bellalli, Thirumenahalli, Chokkanahalli, Dasarahalli, Thanisandra, Horamavu, Agara, Geddalahalli, Kothanur, Narayanapura, Balagere, Bellandur Amanikere, Devarabisanahalli, among others.

In the Varthur-Whitefield belt, localities such as Gunjur, Hagadur, Kadabeesanahalli, Kadugodi Plantation, Varthur, Panathur, Ramagondanahalli, Siddapur and Ganakallu will be affected.

Parts of south and south-west Bengaluru, including Uttarahalli, Subramanyapura, Begur, Gottigere, Gubbalalu, Doddakallasandra, Kasavanahalli, Ambalipura, Anjanapura, Kaikondanahalli, Talaghattapura and Raghuvanahalli, will also see supply disruption during the repair window.

Advisory to Residents

BWSSB has advised residents, commercial establishments and offices in the affected areas to store adequate drinking water in advance and plan usage carefully for the day, as supply will remain suspended from morning until late evening.

Officials said that once the leak on the transmission line is sealed and testing is completed, normal Cauvery 5th stage water supply will be restored to all affected neighbourhoods. The board reiterated that the repair work is being prioritised to protect critical infrastructure and reduce the risk of recurring supply issues in the future.
