Bengaluru To Build New Railway Station At Devanahalli To Boost Transport Links
Bengaluru is set to revolutionize its rail infrastructure with plans to create a sprawling new railway terminal near Devanahalli, covering 1000 acres, aimed at alleviating the pressure on existing city stations and enhancing airport links. This ambitious project is a part of the South Western Railway's (SWR) broader scheme to modernize rail services in the area, reflecting a proactive approach to managing the city's escalating transportation demands.

The initiative seeks to establish a terminal outfitted with 16 platforms and additional facilities to streamline operations and passenger flow. Compared to the state's largest station, KSR Bengaluru, which spans 107 acres with 10 platforms, the proposed development is monumental. It also aims to incorporate 20 stabling lines, which are crucial for parking trains post-service, and 10 pit lines for their maintenance and inspection, marking a significant enhancement in the region's rail maintenance capabilities.
Strategic Location for Optimal Connectivity
Chosen for its strategic benefits, the terminal will sit conveniently between Bullahalli and KG Gururayanahosuru villages, close to the Venkatagiri Kote Halt station. This location is not only adjacent to the Bengaluru-Hyderabad Road (National Highway 44) but also merely 7 kilometers from the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), fostering easy access. Proximity to Kempegowda International Airport, just 15 kilometers away, will significantly boost connections for travelers, making transitions between rail and air modes smoother.
A high-ranking SWR construction division official disclosed plans for an imminent feasibility study to assess various aspects of the project, including land requirements, cost estimations, and potential social and environmental impacts. This study, pivotal for moving forward, will also project passenger traffic to ensure the terminal meets future needs.
Addressing Urban Congestion and Enhancing Accessibility
Yogesh Mohan, the Divisional Railway Manager for Bengaluru, highlighted the project's nascent phase, with an estimated cost of around Rs 1,500 crore. The new facility is expected to ease congestion at the bustling KSR Bengaluru and Yeshwantpur stations and improve access to Bengaluru's northern and northeastern suburbs. This is particularly significant for areas around the airport, where expansion has been restricted due to space constraints at Yelahanka Junction.
In addition to serving local commuters, the terminal will facilitate easy airport access, promoting efficient travel between rail and air services. This development aligns with SWR's vision to modernize Bengaluru's railway infrastructure, echoing its commitment to enhancing commuter experiences and accommodating the city's growth.
Modernizing Bengaluru's Rail Network
The Devanahalli terminal is a cornerstone of SWR's strategy to overhaul the city's rail infrastructure. This comes alongside the operationalization of the SMVT Bengaluru mega terminal, which already manages nearly 50 trains to East and Northeast India. In the fiscal year 2023-24, SMVT Bengaluru served over 44 lakh passengers, contributing Rs 456.30 crore in revenue. Moreover, plans are underway to redevelop Yeshwantpur and Bengaluru Cantonment stations, with significant upgrades anticipated for KSR Bengaluru.
Despite the abandonment of a previously proposed terminal in Hejjala due to feasibility issues, the Devanahalli project stands out as a pivotal element of Bengaluru's railway enhancement strategy. It promises to address the city's burgeoning transport needs, symbolizing a significant leap towards modernizing and expanding its railway system.
