Bengaluru Then Vs Now: 1950s Rare MG Road Photo Goes Viral Cat: Bengaluru
An old photograph from the 1950s, capturing a parking scene on Bengaluru's MG Road, has resurfaced on social media, evoking nostalgia among users. The image, shared by the handle Indian History Pics on March 15, shows one of the city's most well-known streets lined with vintage cars and cycle rickshaws. The caption on X, formerly known as Twitter reads, "1950: Car Parking on M.G. Road, Bangalore." Since its posting, the image has gathered over 34,000 views.
The photograph has sparked discussions about Bengaluru's transformation over the decades. While some users admired the simplicity and charm of the past, others debated whether life in the city was truly better back then.

One user, reminiscing about the city's earlier days, commented, "Bengaluru must have been a paradise back then." However, another user offered a different perspective, stating, "Even though I am a critic myself, times are far better now. Back then, over 75 per cent of people were below the poverty line, unlike now, when almost everyone carries a smartphone."
Some users also highlighted the impact of urbanisation on MG Road, particularly the Metro project. One comment read, "Then the government decided to build a Metro line in the middle of it and destroy its beauty," referring to the changes the once-picturesque street has undergone.
This is not the first time a vintage image of Bengaluru has gone viral. In January 2025, another old photograph of Majestic bus terminal from 1994, taken on a "cloudy morning at 9:05 am," gained attention online. The image depicted a much quieter scene compared to the present-day hustle and bustle of the transit hub.
As Bengaluru continues to evolve, such photographs serve as reminders of its past, sparking reflection on both its progress and the challenges of rapid urbanisation.
