Bengaluru Skydeck Tower to Rise in Kommaghatta After Another Location Shift
The Karnataka government has once again shifted the proposed site for its ambitious 'Skydeck' observation tower in Bengaluru. This project aims to boost tourism by showcasing the city's culture and other attractions. The location changes have been frequent, with various reasons cited for each shift. The latest decision involves a new site selection, replacing the previously identified location.
Initially, the government had planned to build this significant South Asian skydeck, taller than Delhi's Qutub Minar, near Kengeri at Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout (BDA). However, this plan was scrapped in favour of a new site at Kommaghatta. The tower is expected to reach a height of 250 metres and will be constructed on 30 acres of land.

Reasons Behind Site Changes
The decision to move from Kempegowda Layout near Kengeri was influenced by several factors. Kommaghatta offers better transport connectivity as it falls under the jurisdiction of the Industrial Area Development Board. Additionally, the area has more residential zones and lakes, making it suitable for such a project. The estimated cost for building the observation tower here is Rs 500 crore.
Previously considered sites included Jnanabharathi Campus and Benniganahalli. However, Jnanabharathi Campus was ruled out due to potential disruptions to academic activities at the university located there. The government then chose Kempegowda Layout but later found Kommaghatta's connectivity superior, leading to the final decision.
Project Leadership and Vision
D.K. Shivakumar is spearheading this initiative aimed at transforming Bengaluru into a tourist hotspot. The skydeck project has been in planning for over a year with ongoing deliberations about its location. The government's vision is to create an iconic structure that attracts visitors from around the world.
