66 Locations Picked for Bengaluru’s High-Tech Automated Parking Towers to Tackle Traffic Chaos

Bengaluru's long-standing parking crisis may finally see relief as the city's traffic police and the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) move forward with plans to create automated multi-level car parking (MLCP) facilities at 66 high-demand locations. These sites-spread across busy commercial streets, metro-adjacent areas and government-owned plots-have been shortlisted to ease pressure caused by unregulated roadside parking.

The proposal marks one of the city's most ambitious urban mobility initiatives in recent years.

Bengaluru's traffic police and the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) are planning automated multi-level car parking (MLCP) facilities at 66 locations to address the city's parking crisis, aiming to maximize space and improve traffic flow using public-private partnerships, a model that has found success in Hyderabad.

Smart Automated Parking to Maximise Space

The upcoming MLCPs will be built using automated and semi-automated parking technology designed to maximise capacity within Bengaluru's constrained land availability. Each structure will follow a ground-plus-nine design and can accommodate up to 485 vehicles with the support of at least seven lifts.

Unlike conventional parking complexes, these facilities will not require ramps or internal driveways. Instead, motorists will deposit their vehicles at an entry bay, after which advanced sensors, hydraulic systems and robotic mechanisms will stack and retrieve cars seamlessly. This reduces waiting time, eliminates human error and ensures faster vehicle processing.

GBA Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao said the new system leverages technology to make parking more space-efficient and reliable. He added that Bengaluru's rising vehicle density demands futuristic solutions to avoid gridlocks worsening across arterial stretches.

Built Under a PPP Model

The GBA will finance the overall project, while construction and operations will be executed under a public-private partnership (PPP) framework. Officials believe this will ensure quicker onboarding of advanced parking infrastructure and efficient long-term management.

The initiative is being rolled out as Bengaluru traffic police push for strict action against illegal parking. Despite marking 1,194 stretches as no-parking zones, enforcement has been challenging due to the scarcity of formal parking spaces. Police recently urged the GBA to create structured facilities to curb violations and reduce road clutter.

Bengaluru Follows Hyderabad's Successful Model

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy highlighted the success of similar automated parking systems in Hyderabad, which helped ease traffic and declutter busy corridors. He noted that Bengaluru requires immediate interventions to prevent escalating congestion on key routes.

The planned MLCPs aim to reduce street-level parking, unblock bottlenecks and support smoother vehicular movement-especially in dense business districts and transport hubs.
