Bengaluru Rains Show Administrative Failures, But Congress Busy In Celebrations: BJP Over Anniversary Event
As Bengaluru grappled with severe flooding, resulting in waterlogged streets and the loss of three lives within 48 hours, the Congress-led Karnataka government chose to celebrate its two-year tenure with a grand celebration in Hosapete. This move drew significant backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which criticized the government for prioritizing festivities over addressing the city's urgent needs. The opposition highlighted the contrast between the state's capital facing infrastructure and flood-related challenges and the ruling party's decision to proceed with the anniversary event amidst this chaos.
The celebration, named Samarpana Sankalpa Samavesha, took place against the backdrop of continuous heavy rainfall, causing inconvenience to attendees. Some found refuge from the rain, while others struggled to seek shelter, exacerbating the situation with flooding and traffic jams in Hosapete. This city, situated about 330-350 km northwest of Bengaluru, serves as the administrative seat of the newly established Vijayanagara district and faced its share of challenges due to the relentless downpour.

Amidst the crisis, Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, respectively, were seen welcoming Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi at Jindal Vijayanagara Airport for the anniversary event. Their presence, along with other senior Congress officials, in Hosapete rather than addressing the dire situation in Bengaluru, added to the criticism from the BJP. The opposition party called the government's actions "irresponsible" and "tone-deaf" to the plight of Bengaluru's residents.
In Bengaluru, the situation was dire, with areas such as Sai Layout, Manyata Tech Park, and Silk Board Junction experiencing severe inundation due to intermittent rainfall. Residents voiced their frustrations over inadequate drainage systems, impassable roads, and slow emergency responses. In response to the mounting crisis, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar visited the BBMP War Room for updates from the civic commissioner but were notably absent from the affected zones, choosing instead to engage with impacted residents virtually.
The BJP, seizing on the government's perceived inaction, accused the Congress of neglecting Bengaluru's infrastructure needs. State BJP President BY Vijayendra lambasted the government for its celebration amidst the city's suffering, citing the loss of lives and extensive flooding as evidence of the administration's misplaced priorities. He criticized the Home Minister, G Parameshwara, for blaming the citizens for the flooding, viewing it as a display of the government's arrogance and indifference towards the city's developmental needs.
Former Deputy Chief Minister and BJP MLA Ashwath Narayan echoed Vijayendra's sentiments, condemning the government's insensitivity and inaction. He accused the Congress of focusing on populist schemes at the expense of meaningful infrastructure development, labeling the administration as one characterized by scams and slogans rather than substantial governance.
Despite the criticism, party sources from the Congress defended the decision to proceed with the anniversary event, asserting that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister were monitoring the situation and coordinating relief efforts remotely. They emphasized the government's commitment to welfare-driven governance, amidst ongoing efforts to manage the crisis on the ground.
