Bengaluru-Pune in Just 7 Hours? ₹50,000 Cr Expressway Set to Redefine Travel

The Bengaluru-Pune Expressway is set to become a vital link between Karnataka and Maharashtra. This ambitious 700-kilometre expressway aims to cut travel time between the two cities from 15 hours to just 7 hours. The project, costing Rs 50,000 crore, will feature six lanes with a maximum speed limit of 120 km/h, facilitating faster travel.

Construction of this expressway is expected to start soon and may be completed by 2028. It will end at the proposed satellite ring road in Muttagaddahalli, Bengaluru. The project received approval for its detailed project report (DPR) from both Maharashtra and Karnataka in February 2025 under the second phase of the Bharatmala project initiated in 2022.

Smart Features and Connectivity

This expressway will include several smart features such as automated toll systems, drone-based project monitoring, surveillance for speed control, and emergency services. It will connect with the Pune-Mumbai Expressway in Pune, enhancing connectivity between major cities.

The expressway will pass through 12 districts: Sangli, Satara, Pune in Maharashtra; Belagavi, Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Vijayanagar, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, and Bengaluru in Karnataka. This route promises improved connectivity across these regions.

Economic Impact and Development

Once completed, this expressway is expected to drive significant economic growth. It will play a crucial role in boosting sectors like tourism and industry while creating job opportunities. Similar projects are underway across India; some have already been inaugurated with vehicles plying on them.

In Karnataka alone, the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway has been opened for traffic. The Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is complete on the Karnataka side but awaits toll implementation. Construction continues on the Tamil Nadu section before it can be inaugurated.

The central government’s approval is awaited for the Bengaluru-Pune Expressway project. Once operational by 2028 as anticipated, it could transform regional connectivity and development dynamics significantly.
