Bengaluru Metro Rolls Out Baby Feeding Centers Across Five Stations

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has taken a significant step to enhance the convenience for nursing mothers by setting up baby feeding centers across five major metro stations, as reported by Deccan Herald. This initiative, supported by collaborations with non-profit organizations, aims to offer a discreet and comfortable space for women to breastfeed their infants.

In a move to address the challenges nursing mothers face in finding suitable places for breastfeeding, the BMRCL, in collaboration with Child Help Foundation and the Sibdi Swavalamban Foundation, unveiled the latest baby feeding center at Baiyappanahalli Metro Station. This initiative ensures that mothers traveling through the metro have access to a clean, well-maintained, and private area for nursing.

Currently, these facilities are available at Baiyappanahalli, Majestic, Yeshwantpur, Kengeri, and Yelachenahalli metro stations, with plans to expand to more locations in the future. The centers are equipped with 8x8 rooms that include broad benches capable of accommodating up to four mothers simultaneously. These benches are specifically designed to provide comfort for mothers, allowing them to rest or even lie down if needed.

Enhancing Metro Stations with Additional Services

Further enhancing the passenger experience, BMRCL is also looking to introduce retail outlets at 55 metro stations along the Purple and Green Lines. This initiative aims not only to provide convenience to commuters but also to generate additional revenue for the metro corporation. The available retail spaces will host a variety of shops, including food and beverage kiosks, convenience stores, and personal care shops. This move is expected to make it easier for passengers to grab a quick snack or pick up essentials during their metro journey.

A BMRCL official mentioned the necessity of evaluating operational costs before further expansion of baby feeding centers. "The upkeep of these centers is handled by the BMRCL. Before adding more centers, we need to assess the operational costs," the official stated.

In metro stations that do not yet have a dedicated feeding center, nursing mothers can seek assistance from the station's customer care to access a private space. This provision ensures that all nursing mothers using the metro system can find a comfortable and private area for feeding their babies.
