Bengaluru Liquor Ban From Feb 14-17 Deals A Blow To Valentine's Day Revenue
Following the imposition of a liquor ban in Bengaluru for Valentine's Day on February 14, the decision by the Bengaluru City police has had repercussions on the city's pubs, restaurants, and bars. Representatives from various industries have voiced concerns, highlighting that the liquor business contributes Rs 60 crore in revenue to the state government and sees a turnover of Rs 120 crore in liquor sales. They further noted that liquor sales typically increase by at least 50% on Valentine's Day.
PC Rao, President of the Bruhat Bengaluru Hoteliers Association, expressed disappointment, stating that the ban has affected both the industry and individuals planning to celebrate. He also mentioned that the state government stands to lose revenue close to Rs 120 crore due to the two-day ban.

These reactions from industry experts emerged following the imposition of the liquor ban in parts of Bengaluru from 5 pm on February 14 to 6 am on February 17, coinciding with the Legislative Council by-election to Bangalore Teachers Constituency scheduled for February 16. However, areas under the jurisdiction of the police commissioner are exempted from the ban.
Karunakar Hegde, Vice-President of the Federation of Wine Merchants Association in Karnataka, warned of significant losses, noting that many pubs and restaurants with common areas serving food and drinks will be forced to shut down entirely.
Pub and restaurant owners in Bengaluru perceive the police decision as a setback to bookings and special event plans for Valentine's Day, during which they typically experience a 50% increase in patronage.
Mukesh Tolani, a member of the Bengaluru Chapter of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), echoed concerns over revenue loss, emphasizing that many establishments had organized special events. He remarked, "We usually see at least 50% more reservations during such celebrations."
Others in the industry expressed similar sentiments, suggesting that the liquor ban was unnecessary since the election pertains only to the Teachers' Constituency. Hegde remarked, "It is not a general election, and only a small section participates. The authorities could have reduced the hours of the ban."
It's important to note that the liquor ban in Bengaluru will be enforced from 5 pm on February 14 until midnight on February 16. Additionally, the ban will be in place on February 20 during vote counting, from 6 am to midnight. However, areas falling under the Police Commissionerate jurisdiction are exempt from the ban.
