‘Bengaluru Ignored’ Controversy: Mohandas Pai Scolded by Zoho and Google Executives on North-South Politics

In a lively exchange on X (formerly Twitter), Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu addressed criticisms from former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai regarding the selection of locations for the government's new AI Centres of Excellence (CoE). Pai had openly criticized the absence of Bengaluru, a major tech hub, from the list of chosen sites for the AI CoE initiative, suggesting a neglect of the southern region's contributions to India's IT prowess. In his response, Vembu, who co-chaired the committee responsible for the selection, shed light on the decision-making process, emphasizing the thorough evaluation carried out by the committee, which comprised predominantly southern members, many from the private sector.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently announced the establishment of three AI Centres of Excellence focused on healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities, to be located at AIIMS and IIT Delhi, IIT Ropar, and IIT Kanpur. This move, aimed at bolstering India's AI capabilities in key sectors, unfortunately did not feature Bengaluru as a selected venue, sparking Pai's pointed inquiry. Pai's post on X not only questioned the omission but also expressed dissatisfaction with what he perceived as the central government's disregard for Bengaluru's tech contributions. He lamented the city's lack of representation in this significant initiative, tagging several Union Ministers and Bengaluru MPs in his plea for attention.

Vembu's clarification revealed that the committee's choices were unbiased and based solely on the merit of potential sites. He urged the public to refrain from framing the selection process within a North-South political narrative, highlighting his and other southern members' involvement in the decision-making. Furthermore, Vembu pointed out that the AIIMS consortium did include institutions from the south, namely IISc Bengaluru and IIT Madras, indicating a broader inclusivity than initially perceived. Google DeepMind's Director, Manish Gupta, also part of the selection committee, echoed Vembu's sentiments on X, asserting the panel's commitment to decisions benefitting the entire nation.

Pai's frustration seemed rooted in a broader concern for Bengaluru's recognition and development, referencing a perceived pattern of neglect by both the central government and the state's Congress-led administration. His call for more investment in Bengaluru and the southern IT sector at large reflects a desire for equitable development and recognition across India's diverse regions.

The dialogue between Pai and Vembu highlights the complexities of governmental decision-making in the context of regional development and the importance of transparent, inclusive processes that consider the diverse needs and strengths of India's many states. The controversy also sheds light on the ongoing dialogue between India's tech leaders and policymakers, a conversation crucial for the nation's technological advancement and equitable growth.
