Bengaluru-Hyderabad Bullet Train Could Reduce Flight Dependence With 2-Hour Intercity Commute

The proposed Bengaluru-Hyderabad bullet train corridor could significantly reduce dependence on flights between the two cities, with the high-speed rail project expected to cut travel time to nearly two hours once operational. According to reports, the proposed bullet trains across the corridor are expected to operate at speeds ranging between 320 and 350 kmph, potentially transforming inter-city travel across South India.

The discussion has gained fresh momentum after the Karnataka Cabinet gave in-principle approval for the Bengaluru-Hyderabad bullet train project. The high-speed rail corridor, announced in the Union Budget, is now moving into the next stage with the Centre and state governments discussing land acquisition and route alignment.

Bengaluru-Hyderabad Bullet Train Corridor

The Hyderabad-Bengaluru bullet train corridor will reportedly connect Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka through a proposed 607-km route.

Out of the total alignment, around 101 km will pass through Karnataka, covering parts of Tumakuru, Chikkaballapur and Bengaluru Rural districts.

At present, express trains operating under South Western Railway take nearly 8 to 12 hours to travel between Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Once the high-speed rail corridor becomes operational, the journey time is expected to reduce drastically to nearly 2 hours and 10 minutes.

The proposed corridor is expected to have stations at Alipur in Chikkaballapur district, near Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli, and at Kodihalli in Hoskote taluk.

Officials have reportedly proposed a fully elevated rail line to ensure uninterrupted high-speed operations.

Many experts believe the project could eventually reduce dependence on short-haul domestic flights between Bengaluru and Hyderabad. While flights take little over an hour in the air, passengers often spend additional hours travelling to airports, completing security procedures and handling baggage formalities.

Bengaluru-Chennai-Mysuru Corridor Planned

Apart from the Hyderabad corridor, a second proposed high-speed rail network will reportedly connect Mysuru, Bengaluru and Chennai through a route spanning between 435 and 463 km.

The Chennai-Bengaluru section alone is expected to cover nearly 306 km.

Currently, travel between Bengaluru and Chennai takes around 5 to 7 hours depending on the mode of transport. With the proposed high-speed rail corridor, the journey could reportedly be completed in just 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Stations proposed along the corridor include KGF in Kolar district, Kodihalli in Hoskote, Whitefield and Baiyappanahalli in Bengaluru.

Kodihalli is expected to emerge as a major interchange point because both the Hyderabad and Chennai bullet train corridors are planned to intersect there. Authorities have also proposed setting up a major depot and maintenance facility at the location.

Land Acquisition Process Underway

The Karnataka government has appointed a nodal officer to supervise land acquisition activities linked to both high-speed rail projects.

According to preliminary estimates, nearly 1,757 hectares of land may reportedly be acquired across Karnataka for the development of the two bullet train corridors.

Baiyappanahalli station is also expected to be integrated with Bengaluru's Namma Metro and suburban rail systems to provide better last-mile connectivity for passengers.

Once completed, the project is expected to position Bengaluru as one of the biggest hubs in South India's emerging high-speed rail network.

Major Boost Expected For Tumakuru District

The Hyderabad-Bengaluru bullet train project is also expected to influence the economic growth of Tumakuru district significantly.

As per the proposed alignment, a station may reportedly come up in the Sira region, providing direct high-speed rail access to local residents.

Tumakuru is already part of the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor, and improved connectivity is expected to attract greater investments from companies based in Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

Travel time between Tumakuru and Bengaluru could reportedly reduce to nearly 20 to 30 minutes, while Hyderabad may become reachable within around one-and-a-half to two hours.

The reduced travel time is expected to make daily inter-city commuting more practical for working professionals.

Land prices around proposed station regions are also expected to rise sharply, potentially boosting the local real estate sector. Apart from economic growth, the project may also generate employment opportunities in transport, hospitality and service industries around the stations.

Improved rail connectivity could additionally help Tumakuru attract more students from Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh, further strengthening its position as an educational hub.

Residents are also expected to get quicker access to advanced healthcare facilities in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

Chikkaballapur And Bengaluru Rural Expected To Witness Growth

The proposed high-speed rail corridor passing through Chikkaballapur district is expected to improve regional connectivity significantly.

Passengers boarding at the proposed Alipur station may reportedly be able to reach Devanahalli or Hoskote within 15 to 20 minutes.

At present, road travel between the region and Hyderabad can take nearly 8 to 10 hours. The proposed bullet train project could reduce this to around two hours.

The region, known for cultivation of fruits, flowers and vegetables, may also benefit from faster transportation of agricultural produce to major urban markets including Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

The corridor is expected to encourage expansion of Bengaluru's IT and industrial ecosystem into Chikkaballapur and Gauribidanur as well.

Direct connectivity to Devanahalli airport is also likely to improve access to air travel for residents from neighbouring districts.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru Rural district is expected to become one of the key centres of the bullet train project due to the planned junction station at Kodihalli.

Railway depots, maintenance hubs and training centres proposed in the region are expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

Industrial regions in Hoskote, Devanahalli and Doddaballapur may also attract multinational firms looking to establish manufacturing facilities nearby.

Modern townships and smart urban clusters are expected to emerge around the proposed stations, leading to major growth in land values.

Chennai-Bengaluru Corridor Could Reshape Regional Economy

The Bengaluru-Chennai bullet train corridor is also expected to significantly influence travel and business activity between the two cities.

Currently, train travel between Bengaluru and Chennai takes nearly 5 to 6 hours, while road journeys can stretch up to 6 or 7 hours. The proposed high-speed rail system could reportedly reduce this to nearly 75 minutes.

Experts believe the drastic reduction in travel time may strengthen economic integration between Bengaluru and Chennai, allowing professionals and businesses to operate more efficiently across both cities.

Industrial belts in KGF, Hoskote and Whitefield are also expected to witness increased demand due to improved accessibility.

The corridor may additionally strengthen collaboration between Bengaluru's technology sector and Chennai's automobile manufacturing industry.

Urban planners also believe the project could help reduce traffic congestion within Bengaluru by encouraging people to live in peripheral regions such as Kolar and Hoskote while commuting through high-speed rail.
