Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway to Cut Travel Time to 3 Hours by March 2026

The ambitious Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, spanning 262 kilometres at an estimated cost of ₹15,188 crore, is expected to be completed between December 2025 and March 2026. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari confirmed the timeline in the Lok Sabha while responding to a query raised by Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan.

Once operational, the expressway will reduce travel time between the two cities from six hours to just three, providing a major boost to regional connectivity. P.C. Mohan noted that the project will not only ease congestion on NH-44 and NH-48 but also bring down logistics costs, enhance trade, and strengthen industrial growth across southern India.

Alongside this project, the government has initiated Detailed Project Reports for two more expressways - the 512 km Bengaluru-Hyderabad route and the 700 km Bengaluru-Pune route. Both are expected to feature advanced traffic management systems, modern amenities, and utility corridors to ensure smoother travel.

Despite its importance, the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway has encountered several challenges that have delayed its progress. In Karnataka, authorities have struggled with land acquisition disputes, delays in compensation disbursement, and difficulties in relocating utilities and religious structures. In Andhra Pradesh, the project has faced setbacks due to pending approvals for work near the Koundinya Wildlife Sanctuary. Tamil Nadu has seen delays caused by restrictions on controlled blasting in residential areas, along with earthwork approvals taking longer than expected. Financial difficulties faced by the concessionaire have also slowed down construction.

Officials remain optimistic that once completed, the expressway will transform connectivity between Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The new corridor is expected to reduce logistics costs, allow faster movement of goods, ease traffic on existing highways, and ultimately fuel economic growth for the region. The Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is now seen as a game-changer for southern India's road infrastructure, promising to reshape the way people and businesses connect across the states.
