Bengaluru Bike Taxis Diver Tells Monthly Earnings; PayTM CEO Reacts

In India, bike taxis have transformed urban travel, providing a cost-effective and convenient way to navigate busy streets. A recent viral video on social media showcased a surprising claim by an Uber and Rapido driver in Bengaluru. The driver stated he earns between Rs 80,000-85,000 monthly, working up to 13 hours daily. His dedication and hard work were credited for this impressive income.

The driver's earnings sparked reactions from onlookers. One remarked, "Itna toh hum nahi kamate, bhaiya" ("Even we don't earn that much"). The rider agreed, noting that even corporate jobs rarely offer such pay. He expressed satisfaction with his independence, saying, "I'm my own boss. I ride my bike, serve customers across the city, and answer to no one. No manager, no office politics – just me, my bike, and the open road."

Income Opportunities in Ride-Hailing

The video caption described it as a classic Bengaluru moment where the man proudly shared his earnings of over ₹80,000 per month as an Uber and Rapido rider. His story highlighted the financial stability achievable through hard work in the gig economy. This has sparked discussions about potential income opportunities in ride-hailing sectors in bustling cities like Bengaluru.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Paytm's founder, also shared the video. He praised India's tech-driven gig economy for creating numerous well-paying jobs that support local economies. "India's new-age technology firms have sparked a revolution in job creation at scale," Mr Sharma wrote on X.

Digital Services Ecosystem

Mr Sharma emphasised the contributions of these workers to India's digital services ecosystem. He suggested calling them "Indian Digital Services" members instead of gig workers. "Yes, I prefer to call them members of Indian Digital Services instead of gig workers," he added.

The video received mixed reactions online. One user commented on the driver's dedication: "Much respect for you sir; it's not easy 13 hours drive every day." Another questioned the impact on health and professional life: "This is the power of digital India. But at what cost to health and professional life?"

Scepticism also emerged among viewers. A user doubted the generalisation of such earnings: "We can't generalise it. How many of these are true? Further 80000 is the total income or net income? lots to answer." Another questioned its feasibility: "This happens only if he doesn't 800 trips a day, charging a minimum 100 per trip."

This story highlights both opportunities and challenges within India's gig economy. While some see it as a path to financial independence, others raise concerns about sustainability and health impacts due to long working hours.
