Bengaluru Bandh Today: Traffic Advisory Issued as 5,000 Protesters Expected at Freedom Park

Bengaluru is bracing for a Bharat Bandh on 9 July 2025, with authorities issuing a traffic advisory. The protest, organised by several groups at Freedom Park, is expected to draw 4,000 to 5,000 people. This could lead to heavy traffic congestion in the area. Bengaluru police have advised commuters to use alternative routes to avoid delays and ensure smoother travel across the city.

A coalition of ten central trade unions has called for this nationwide strike. They are protesting against what they see as the government's "anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate" policies. Key sectors in Bengaluru, such as banking, insurance, and postal services, are likely to be affected by the strike.

Impact on Public Services

The Bharat Bandh will impact various sectors including banking and postal services. State transport services and public sector units (PSUs) will also be affected. However, schools, colleges, and private sector enterprises will remain open. Emergency services like hospitals and police stations will continue to operate normally.

Public transport might face disruptions during the bandh. While BMTC and KSRTC haven't announced service stoppages yet, commuters should prepare for possible delays or cancellations. Cab and metro services are expected to run without interruptions.

Reasons Behind the Strike

The unions allege that the government has not held the annual labour conference for a decade. They claim decisions are being made against workers' interests by imposing four labour codes that weaken collective bargaining. These actions are seen as favouring employers under the guise of 'ease of doing business'.

Workers from coal and power sectors will join the strike, including over 27 lakh electricity workers. Although full power outages are unlikely, minor disruptions may occur. The protest aims to highlight grievances against economic reforms perceived as detrimental to workers' rights.

The organisations involved include Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC), Trade Union Coordination Centre (TUCC), Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA), All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), Labour Progressive Federation (LPF), and United Trade Union Congress (UTUC).

Traffic disruptions may occur on busy routes due to the large gathering at Freedom Park. Authorities urge citizens to plan their travel accordingly to minimise inconvenience during this significant protest event.
