Bengaluru Auto Driver Who Slapped Student Gets Crowd-Funding Support To Cover Rs 30,000 Fine

Muthuraj, the Bengaluru auto driver arrested last week for abusing a woman passenger, is receiving unexpected support from some sections of the public. Reports indicate that his legal fees could amount to ₹30,000, prompting a few individuals on social media platform X to suggest crowdfunding his expenses. However, this support has also sparked severe backlash online, with many criticizing the move to stand by an alleged woman assaulter.

One user, Mohan Dasari, expressed that Muthuraj should not have to bear such a heavy financial burden and called for legal assistance. He wrote, "I know frustration made him react like that, and he spent four days in jail. Losing his earnings shouldn't cost ₹30,000 in legal fees. Any lawyer willing to help R Muthuraj for bail? I'll donate ₹1,000, and others can join."

The idea gained traction, with several users showing support for raising funds. One commented, "Let us know if Kannadigas can raise ₹30k for the auto driver. I'll contribute ₹1,000. He deserved jail time, but a ₹30k fine during these inflationary times is excessive."

Another supporter added, "I agree and will donate ₹1,000 to the cause. Someone should ensure the auto driver gets justice. Those living on daily wages understand the value of money more than mall-going passengers."

However, many criticized the initiative, questioning how a man accused of abusing women could receive financial aid. A user named Sid wrote, "So Kannada warriors are crowdfunding for a criminal who assaulted a young student? Using regional pride to justify such acts is disturbing!"

The controversy follows a viral video showing Muthuraj abusing women passengers in his auto rickshaw. One woman alleged that he grabbed her phone and slapped her after she made him wait and then canceled the ride due to a change in plans. Muthuraj was arrested by Bengaluru police on the same day.
