Bellandur Lake Foam Returns After Bengaluru Rains, Alarms Residents
Toxic foam has once again surfaced in Bellandur Lake, causing distress among residents living nearby. Years ago, the lake made national headlines due to similar pollution issues, and promises were made to clean it. However, locals say there has been no significant development since then. The return of foam has now renewed fears about pollution and health risks in the area.

The foam began reappearing after the recent spell of heavy rains in Bengaluru. Due to the increased flow of water into the lake, a large quantity of foam has formed and is being carried by the wind into surrounding residential areas. Residents believe this is a sign that untreated sewage and industrial waste continue to enter the lake.
People living in areas such as Bellandur, Kariamma Agrahara, Yamalur, Kempapura, Chalaghatta, Nagasandra Ibballur, Devara Beesanahalli, and Kadu Beesanahalli are once again facing the brunt of the issue. The sight and smell of the foam, along with its spread into homes and roads, have raised health concerns among families.
Why does foam appear in the lake?
Environmental experts explain that the foam is caused by the entry of untreated wastewater into the lake. When it rains heavily, large volumes of water stir up the bottom of the lake, which contains sludge formed from decomposed organic material. As this sludge mixes with pollutants, it leads to the release of gases and creates foam.
As the water level rises, air bubbles form and shoot up as high as 25 feet, creating large amounts of froth. Some of the dissolved solids in the water, along with bacteria, further contribute to the formation of foam.
Local resident Ramanna said, "This has been going on for years. Every time it rains, the foam returns. People are suffering from skin allergies and breathing problems. Authorities need to take this seriously."
Health concerns and call for action
The toxic foam poses a risk to public health, especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues. Despite repeated complaints and assurances, residents say no effective steps have been taken to stop the inflow of untreated water or to restore the lake.
The renewed appearance of foam in Bellandur Lake serves as a reminder that lake pollution remains a pressing issue in Bengaluru. Locals are now urging the state government and civic authorities to act urgently and implement long-term solutions.
