Bangalore Metro Fare Hike Plans Put on Hold Following Central Government’s Request
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), which had previously planned to raise metro train ticket prices, has temporarily shelved the proposal. The central government has requested a detailed report on the fare hike but has not granted approval yet. Reports suggest that a fare increase this year seems unlikely.
Fare Hike Plans Put on Hold

Last week, BMRCL held a meeting to discuss a potential 45% increase in metro fares. However, the proposal reportedly failed to secure the central government's approval.
Why the Center is Reluctant
Following the recent rise in government bus ticket prices across Karnataka, the central government has expressed concerns that another fare hike, this time for the metro, would add to the financial burden on commuters. The central team has asked BMRCL to submit a comprehensive report before any decision is made on the proposed increase.
Temporary Suspension of the Fare Hike
BMRCL initially planned to implement the fare hike starting February 1, citing maintenance costs as the reason for the increase. Despite opposition from passengers during consultations, the corporation pushed ahead with the proposal. However, following the central government's request, the decision has been temporarily suspended, delaying any immediate fare hikes.
Metro Fare Details and Past Revisions
Currently, Bangalore Metro fares range from a minimum of ₹10 to a maximum of ₹60. This would have been the first fare revision since 2017. Rising operational costs were cited as the primary reason for considering the fare hike.
Parking Charges Spark Controversy
In addition to concerns about fare increases, there have been complaints regarding double charges for parking at metro stations. Of the 66 metro stations in Bengaluru, 33 offer parking facilities, which accommodate around 11,000 two-wheelers and over 1,500 cars.
For now, passengers can expect metro fares to remain unchanged as BMRCL works on submitting its report to the central government.
