Auto Rickshaw Fare Hike: 5 Rupee Per KM Hike Under Discussion; Passengers Brace For New Year Shock

In response to the surging costs of petrol and gas, auto rickshaw drivers are contemplating fare increases. A crucial meeting by the auto drivers' association is set to take place, during which the fare adjustment will be discussed. This adjustment could introduce a significant hike in travel costs for passengers starting from the new year. Auto rickshaw operators have proposed a fare increase of Rs 15 per kilometer and Rs 30 for every two kilometers traveled.

This proposal, however, is not without its detractors. Notably, over ten organizations, including prominent ride-sharing services like Ola and Uber, have voiced their opposition to the fare hike. Moreover, certain auto rickshaw associations have declared their intention to refrain from raising their fares until the issue with the Rapido bike taxi service is resolved. These developments come amid a broader conversation about the affordability and accessibility of public transportation.

The meeting's agenda is not solely focused on the drivers' perspectives but will also consider the impact on consumers. There's a possibility that the fare might see a smaller increase of Rs 5 per kilometer, a move that balances the need for a fair compensation for auto drivers with the financial constraints of their passengers.

The anticipated meeting was to be hosted by the Regional Transport Officer in Jayanagar, under the guidance of the Regional Transport Authority. It was expected to provide a definitive stance on the proposed fare adjustments. However, the absence of the Deputy Police Commissioner led to the cancellation of this meeting. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials have assured that a new date for the discussion will be promptly set.

This delay in reaching a decision leaves passengers in a state of uncertainty regarding the cost of future auto rickshaw travels. It underscores the complexities involved in balancing the economic needs of auto rickshaw drivers with those of the commuting public. As both sides await a rescheduled meeting, the potential fare hike remains a topic of heated discussion among stakeholders in the transportation sector.
