600 Heatstroke Cases In A Month: Karnataka Govt Rushes To Set Up Special Wards

In a concerning trend, Karnataka has reported a staggering 600 cases of heat stroke in the last month alone as temperatures soar across the region. With the relentless summer sun showing no signs of abating, the number of cases is feared to rise further.

To tackle this alarming situation, authorities are taking proactive measures. Separate heat stroke wards are being set up in government hospitals, with a particular focus on increasing facilities in Bengaluru. These wards aim to provide specialized treatment to those affected by heat stroke.

600 Heatstroke Cases In Karnataka

The state has been experiencing its highest maximum temperatures and heat waves in the last 8 years, leading to discomfort among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Heat stroke, particularly in the elderly, can result in complications like low blood pressure and fatigue.

To address these challenges, the health department has issued directives for the construction of dedicated heat stroke wards in government hospitals. These wards, each equipped with 5 to 6 beds, will be equipped with essential facilities such as medicines, oxygen, coolers, and fans.

Heat stroke occurs when the body fails to regulate its temperature due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures or sunlight. Recognizing the symptoms, including headache, high fever, fainting, confusion, and nausea, is crucial for early intervention.

To prevent heat stroke, it's advised to stay hydrated, avoid excessive alcohol consumption, and wear breathable clothing. If someone exhibits symptoms of heat stroke, they should be moved to a cooler area, have excess clothing removed, and be given cool water to drink.
