55 Namma Metro Stations Along Purple And Green Lines To Feature Shops And Cafes For Commuters!
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is set to enhance the commuter experience and boost its financial health by introducing shops and cafes at 55 stations along the Purple and Green Namma metro lines. In an effort to generate non-fare revenue, BMRCL has announced that it will invite tenders for retail outlets within the metro stations, which will include food and beverage kiosks, convenience stores, and personal care outlets.

According to a report by *The Hindu*, BMRCL officials indicated that this initiative is a strategic move to support the corporation's financial sustainability while simultaneously enhancing the overall experience for commuters. "We are leasing these vacant spaces to foster essential retail services that align with commuter needs," a BMRCL official stated.
Strict Guidelines for Commercial Activities
To ensure a safe and pleasant environment within metro premises, strict guidelines have been established regarding permissible commercial activities. The sale of alcohol, tobacco, and gambling-related products is strictly prohibited. Additionally, the use of LPG and kerosene within metro stations is not allowed.
BMRCL has identified a total of 220 vacant spaces across its 55 metro stations. Each of these spaces is categorized with specific location codes, with varying dimensions designed to accommodate a range of businesses. The tender document provided by BMRCL details the layout, area in square feet, and minimum reserved monthly license fees for each space, offering interested parties the flexibility to choose locations that best suit their business needs.
Recovery from Pandemic Losses
During the pandemic, Namma Metro faced significant revenue losses as passenger footfall plummeted. This downturn adversely affected BMRCL's fare collections and led to the closure of numerous eateries and retail stores that previously operated within the metro stations due to low sales and high operating costs. As a result, the non-fare revenue for BMRCL experienced a considerable decline.
With passenger numbers now returning to pre-pandemic levels, BMRCL is optimistic about renewed commercial interest in the available retail spaces. An official commented, "The situation has improved, and we believe this is the right time to open up spaces for rental once again," as reported by *The Hindu*.
BMRCL's latest initiative aims not only to revitalize the retail landscape within its stations but also to create a more convenient and enjoyable commuting experience for passengers, marking a significant step in the post-pandemic recovery of Bangalore's metro system.
