OpenAI Plans Major AI Data Centre Expansion In India To Boost Local Services

OpenAI, known for creating ChatGPT, is planning a significant expansion in India by establishing one of the country's largest AI data centres. This facility is projected to have a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt, marking a development in a where companies like Microsoft, Google, and Reliance have already heavily invested in digital infrastructure.

Globally, OpenAI has been investing billions into what it calls Stargate, an extensive network of AI data centres. In the US, OpenAI has partnered with SoftBank and Oracle to develop facilities that could rival the world's largest computing hubs. Reports indicate that the company has already committed over 4.5 gigawatts of capacity there.

OpenAI's Strategic Expansion in India

India has emerged as a crucial market for OpenAI due to its user base and future prospects. The company is setting up an office in New Delhi and expanding its local team. Additionally, it has introduced a $5 monthly plan to make ChatGPT more accessible to Indian users. This aligns with the government's IndiaAI Mission worth $1.2 billion, aimed at developing homegrown large language models and enhancing AI capabilities in the country.

The proposed data centre would not only enhance AI services for Indian users but also address concerns about sensitive data being transferred overseas. It would enable OpenAI to offer faster, more customised services while building trust with regulators and policymakers.

Global Projects and Partnerships

Outside America, OpenAI is involved in major projects in Norway and Abu Dhabi. The UAE project involves a facility with a total size of 5 gigawatts, sparking debate in Washington over the risks of sending thousands of Nvidia chips to the Gulf. In contrast, India does not face such restrictions. The Trump administration recently confirmed that export controls on AI chips would not be extended to India, removing a significant hurdle for companies like OpenAI.

The company is also collaborating closely with the US government on its "OpenAI for Countries" programme. This initiative aims to build AI infrastructure aligned with democratic values and counter China's growing influence. More than 30 nations have shown interest, with India expected to play a vital role in this effort.

Potential Indian Partnerships

According to sources familiar with the matter, OpenAI is in preliminary discussions with potential Indian partners for this project. Although the location hasn't been finalised yet and timelines remain unclear, Chief Executive Sam Altman may reveal more details during his upcoming visit to India later this month. So far, the company has refrained from making any official comments.
