Meet Trapit Bansal, IIT Kanpur Alumni All Set To Join Meta’s Superintelligence Team After OpenAI Stint
After Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shook the tech world by poaching some of the industry's top AI minds for his ambitious 'Super' AI team, the news that Indian-origin AI expert Trapit Bansal has left OpenAI to join Meta has intensified the buzz.
Bansal, an IIT Kanpur Alumni, was a key figure in OpenAI's early progress-particularly in the development of its o1 model. He is now part of Meta's AI Superintelligence team and is poised to help lead the company's charge in the AI arms race.

Bansal's exit is particularly notable given the timing. With OpenAI CEO Sam Altman laying out bold plans for the firm's future, the loss of someone so integral to the development of its core reasoning model-created in collaboration with co-founder Ilya Sutskever-marks a critical moment.
Having joined OpenAI in 2022, Bansal's contributions to the o1 model laid a foundation for subsequent breakthroughs, including o3 and DeepSeek's R1, both of which have recently pushed the boundaries of reasoning in AI.
What is Meta's AI Superintelligence Team?
Meta's newly-formed AI Superintelligence unit is far from a passive player in the competitive landscape-it's a team built with the express purpose of leapfrogging existing AI leaders.
Its growing list of high-profile recruits already includes Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI; Jack Rae, previously with Google DeepMind; and Johan Schalkwyk, a seasoned machine learning expert.
Reports suggest that multiple ex-OpenAI researchers have also joined Meta's ranks in recent weeks.
The aggressive recruitment drive is said to be personally overseen by Mark Zuckerberg, who is reportedly offering unprecedented financial packages, with some offers allegedly reaching $100 million, in order to attract the brightest minds in the field.
In addition to individual hires, Meta is also exploring acquisitions of entire AI research firms to strengthen its capabilities.
Despite this, Sam Altman has publicly maintained that none of OpenAI's "best people" have accepted Meta's offers-though Bansal's departure appears to challenge that claim.
Bansal's move is more than just a change in employer; it represents a strategic realignment in the global AI landscape.
As the battle for next-generation AI supremacy heats up, the ability to secure and retain elite talent may prove to be the decisive factor in shaping the trajectory of artificial intelligence.
The stakes have never been higher, and it's evident that the AI talent war is entering a more aggressive and high-stakes phase.
