Google Launches AI-Generated Summaries In Discover Feed To Enhance User Experience
Google is introducing AI-generated summaries in its Discover feed, replacing traditional news headlines. This feature is available on both Android and iOS versions of the Google search app. Instead of headlines, users will see a summary created by AI, accompanied by the news publication's logo and sources. This change aims to streamline how users access information.
When users tap on the overlapping icons at the top left corner, a "More" button appears, revealing all linked articles. The feature also provides a three-line preview before expanding the AI-generated summary with a "See more" button. However, Google cautions that AI-generated content may contain errors.

AI Summaries Focus on Lifestyle Topics
Currently, not all news stories in the Google app have AI summaries. TechCrunch reported that this feature is being rolled out in the United States. A Google spokesperson confirmed this rollout and mentioned that AI summaries would concentrate on trending lifestyle topics such as sports and entertainment.
This new approach aims to help users quickly decide which pages to visit. By summarising content, Google hopes to enhance user experience by making it easier to navigate through trending topics without sifting through multiple headlines.
Impact on Publishing Industry
The introduction of AI-generated summaries has raised concerns within the publishing industry. Since these summaries reduce the need for users to visit websites directly, there has been a noticeable decline in traffic and revenue for publishers. This trend highlights the challenges faced by traditional media outlets in adapting to technological advancements.
In addition to AI summaries, Google is exploring new ways to present news in Discover. One such method involves displaying bullet points below headlines, although these do not carry an AI label. These changes reflect Google's ongoing efforts to innovate how news is consumed.
A report from The Economist, citing Similarweb data, indicated a 15% decrease in global search traffic year over year as of June. This decline underscores the shifting dynamics in how people access information online and the growing influence of AI-driven solutions.
As technology continues to evolve, Google's integration of AI into its services exemplifies its commitment to enhancing user experience while navigating the complexities of digital content consumption.
