Sam Altman Warns AI Could Replace 40% of Jobs, Reach Superintelligence by 2030

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has sparked fresh debates about artificial intelligence and its impact on the workforce. After receiving the Axel Springer Award, he cautioned that AI is progressing more swiftly than expected. By 2030, it might achieve superintelligence, solving problems beyond human capabilities. Altman noted, "GPT-5 is already smarter than me and many others," underscoring AI's rapid development.

Altman foresees AI reaching superintelligence by the decade's end, potentially making scientific breakthroughs unattainable by humans. He stated, "By the end of this decade, if we don't have extraordinarily capable models that do things humans cannot, I'd be very surprised." While this progress promises innovation, it also brings challenges like potential widespread job losses.

AI's Impact on Employment

Altman predicts that AI could automate 30–40% of tasks in the economy by 2030. Although some jobs may vanish, new roles are likely to emerge. He stressed the importance of adaptability and mastering what he calls the "meta-skill of learning how to learn" to navigate these changes.

Addressing concerns about AI surpassing human abilities, Altman dismissed fears of human irrelevance. He emphasized aligning AI with human values to avoid unintended consequences from unchecked development.

OpenAI is exploring hardware innovations as well. After hiring an Apple designer, they are developing a "small family of devices" aimed at transforming computing. These devices intend to surpass traditional apps and notifications by enabling fully AI-driven task management. Altman described this as a significant shift in computing following keyboards and touchscreens.

Reflecting on his role as a parent, Altman highlighted teaching his son creativity and resilience in an AI-dominated world. He also suggested politicians will increasingly use AI for decision-making while humans continue making major decisions.
