AI-Driven Facial Recognition Systems To Enhance Safety At Major Indian Railway Stations

The Indian government is set to introduce AI-driven facial recognition systems at key railway stations like Mumbai CST, New Delhi, and Ahmedabad. This initiative aims to enhance passenger safety, especially for women, under the Centre's Safe City project. The system will identify individuals listed in the National Database on Sexual Offenders (NDSO) by linking with CCTV cameras at these stations.
The AI technology will scan faces in real-time, comparing them with over two million records of convicted sex offenders in the NDSO. This will help authorities identify and take action against known offenders attempting to use the railways. The Ministry of Home Affairs has approved a pilot rollout at seven major stations across India.
Enhanced Safety Measures
Besides Mumbai CST and New Delhi, the system will be implemented at Bengaluru, Chennai, Howrah, Ahmedabad, and Pune stations. These locations were chosen due to their high footfall and strategic importance within the rail network. The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve safety in public transport hubs.
This move follows a Supreme Court petition by the Women Lawyers' Association. They highlighted the need for better protection for women in public spaces due to rising crimes and low conviction rates—less than two percent compared to pending cases. The petition underscored the urgency of implementing such measures.
Comprehensive Safety Features
The Safe City project also includes smart lighting, emergency call boxes, automated number plate recognition, and AI surveillance tools like drones. These features are being rolled out in several metropolitan areas such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad to bolster public safety further.
Officials assure that the facial recognition system will adhere to existing privacy norms and operate under strict guidelines. If successful, this technology could be expanded to more railway stations and other public areas across India in the future.
The introduction of these advanced security measures reflects a significant step towards ensuring safer travel environments for all passengers. By leveraging technology effectively, authorities aim to create a more secure atmosphere in busy transit locations.
