Pics: Land Acquisition Bill passed; gets majority support from BJP
New Delhi, Aug 30: The Land Acquisition Bill that was pushed in the Lok Sabha yesterday has been passed with flying colours with the opposition supporting it too.
A second trump card in the last few months, the Congress has managed to pass two of its pet Bills-the Food Bill and the Land Bill in the last three months.
"I am quite happy," said Rahul Gandhi, who has championed the legislation that replaces a more-than-century-old law.
The Land Acquisition Bill got a majority support from BJP
However, this could not have been possible without the support of the majority opposition party BJP, which also sought a few amendments in the Bill. Discussed in the month of April, the opposition had demanded that the land could be leased to developers so that the ownership is could remain with the owners, giving them a steady income from it.

In fact, Sushma Swaraj was all praises for the Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, while the Bill was being debated. She "liked the way he has pursued this Bill" and the BJP leaders agreed with a thumping of desks.
Initial opposition had come from SP Leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, who said that the farmers should be consulted every time there is an acquisition. But, finally he voted in favour of the Bill. This bill could be a solution to increasing land acquisition clashes between the state authorities and the people in states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and other such states that are being developed.
