Flight services to resume today: Kochi airport authorities

Kochi, Aug 6: Flight operations at Kochi airport are likely to resume on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said, sounding hope for those several thousands of passengers affected by the closure of the airport because of heavy rain over the last few days.

Director of the Cochin International Airport AKC Nair said there is water-logging on the runway and that flight services will resume soon. International check-in had already begun till the last reports came in and domestic check-in was also about th begin. The authorities asked the passengers to know the revised schedule from the airlines.

The airport was shut on Monday after the runway and parking bay were left flooded. Over 120 flights were cancelled on Monday, affecting 11,000 passengers.

Meanwhile, rescuers were looking for possible survivors in rain-hit Idukki district where 14 persons were killed in a string of landslides.

Chief minister Oommen Chandy will visit Idukki on Tuesday to take stock of the magnitude of the disaster and decide on the relief package to compensate the victims of the natural calamity.
