240 houses damaged as heavy rain lashes Trivandrum
Thiruvananthapuram, June 25: Rain continued to batter the capital district, leaving nearly 240 houses either fully or partially damaged since Sunday. The district headquarters bore the brunt of the heavy rain, with 112 houses being completely damaged within the Thiruvananthapuram taluk limits.
Apart from the 112 houses that suffered total damage, another 45 were damaged partially.
Heavy rain also pulled down five houses and partially damaged 42 houses in Chirayinkeezhu. In Neyyattinkara, the toll stood at 34 partially damaged houses.
There were reports of severe sea erosion and tidal waves leaving several houses on the seashore inundated for some time early on Monday in areas including Valiathura and Chirayinkeezhu.

According to B. Chandrika, Deputy Collector (Disaster Management), the number of families in relief camps, which had gone up to five on Sunday, had reached 311, reported The Hindu.
The number of people in these camps - set up at the Valiyathura Government Upper Primary School, the Valiyathura Fisheries School, the Shanguvattam Government Lower Primary School, the St. Joseph's School at Anchuthengu, and the Vilabhagam School - went up to 1,170.
The list of those lodged in the relief camps was being prepared to arrange free rations for them, Ms. Chandrika said, adding as of now, the district administration had made arrangements for provisions of four meals a day at all the camps.
Some of the inmates, who were from the fishing community, had already got free rations as part of the monsoon trawl ban.
Media also reported that the medical teams that visited the camps twice a day and health workers conducting disease-prevention activities too were on the job, Ms. Chandrika said.
To add a sigh of relief, the rains have stopped from almost the past 20 hours.
