Mumbai: Speeding luxury car injures 5
According to details from the police, the incident took place at 1:30 am near Police Zymkhana where police were checking for drunk driving.
The driver of the luxury car although not under the influence of alcohol was driving at break-neck speed on Marine Drive road. When he applied brakes after reaching the check post he lost control over the vehicle and hit the policemen on duty and a pedestrian.
The injured constables are Sainath Dhuri (55), attached to JJ Marg police station, Amol Kale (52), Suresh Kate (52) and Pankaj Khairnar (30), all attached with Marine Drive police.
Mubarak Rahimatali Shaikh (35), who walking on the pavement at the time, sustained injuries.
"Khandekar was not driving under the influence of alcohol. He was booked under several sections of the IPC, including causing hurt due to rash and negligent driving. He was produced in the court, which granted him bail," a police officer was quoted as saying.
With incidents like these taking place regularly the police are a worried lot. Police persons say that although they are taking precautions, they do not know how to prevent them otherwise. A policeman said that although they had place barricades in a tighter zig-zag form that would compel drivers to slow down, it has not helped much.
