Forget Nirbhaya fund, HRD min to teach girls self-defence
New Delhi, March 1: While women's safety continues to haunt the country, the government is yet to come up with proactive measures to tackle the root cause of the situation. Even as there is need for much clarity as to how the Nirbhaya fund of Rs 1,000 crore, allocated to support initiatives by the government and NGOs working towards protecting the dignity and ensuring safety of women, is going to be utilised, the Centre has come with with yet another plan.
Shoving off the responsibility on the girls themselves, the HRD ministry's latest announcement is that self- defence training should be part of the physical education curriculum for girls in all schools.
"The ministry wrote to all education secretaries in the states in January, saying specifically, from the upper primary level, physical training classes should include self defence for girls," said Minister of State for HRD Shashi Tharoor.
"This is indeed a very legitimate concern," he said, adding that physical education should be included for both genders," he said.

The joke on facebook is that even as a politician (PJ Kurien who has been accused in a gangrape case) who is accused of gang-rape is saved, at the same time a project of doling out a tribute to another gangrape victim has been taken up by the government.
Tweeple ridicule Nirbhaya fund
The 'Nirbhaya fund' which has been allocated for the women's safety in memory of the Delhi gang-rape victim in the 2013 Union Budget has received much criticism. Through Friday, it was trending on twitter. Some of the tweets include-
Gururaj S @Equateall- 1000 cr #Nirbhaya fund may be siphoned off by some 'women's NGOs' in collusion with W&C SW dept. A new cottage industry takes birth! Scary!
Meena- "The Nirbhaya Fund can also be argued as redundant: it is only an admission of the failure of the state."
Aniket @_Aniket: the fund is for Congi's and not for the rape victims.
Chandru @Chandrus: Rs 341 cr spent on VIP security in Delhi alone as PC allocates Rs 1000 cr for Nirbhaya Fund to secure all women in India!
Delhi Says @DelhiSays: Nirbhaya Fund of Rs 1000 cr to ensure safety & empowerment of women. Will mere allocation help the cause or serious implementation is needed?
@aackthu: So Now Rape Victims File FIRs in Local Police Station So That a Compensation Can be Claim at Nirbhaya Fund. Quick Way of Disposin Rape Cases
Nipun Ambastha @nipunambastha: Nirbhaya Fund probably will become fund to sponsor 2014 elections.
