Vishwaroopam Success:Kamal proves Jaya, Muslim groups wrong

Chennai, Feb 12: Film stalwart Kamal Haasan has proved all his detractors wrong, as the controversial multilingual film "Vishwaroopam" is raking moolah at the box-office. The film was stalled for almost two weeks before it was released in Kamal's native-state Tamil Nadu.

The film was banned by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, citing the release of the film might cause law and order problems in the state. The film was opposed by Muslim organisations. They demanded a ban on the film, saying the film depicted Muslims in a bad light.

The controversy surrounding the film made national headlines. Even CM Jayalalithaa came under scanner, as political analysts say that the ban was an attempt by the ruling AIADMK government to appease Muslims by resorting to suppression of freedom.

Finally, the film was released after Kamal reached an agreement with Muslims organisations. The truce was said to be brokered by Jayalalithaa.

Now, the film is said to have fetched Rs 120 crore in just four days of its release in Tamil Nadu.

However, the film was earlier released in neighbouring states of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The audiences have given a thumbs-up to the film of actor-director. The Hindi version of the film "Vishwaroop" is also a hit across North India.

Vishwaroopam, made a cost of Rs 96 crores, is Kamal Haasan's most expensive film and has been written, directed and produced by the actor who also stars in it with Rahul Bose, Shekhar Kapur and Pooja Kumar.
