7 people injured in clash near Charminar in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Nov 17: At least seven people were injured in stone-pelting after violence broke out in the area around Charminar here on Friday afternoon. The trouble began when members of a community reportedly tried to hold prayers inside the Charminar and were stopped by the police. The protesters hurled stones at the police personnel guarding the monument and set four vehicles and a motorcycle on fire.

Additional police commissioner Mohammad Ahsan Reza said the community members were permitted to hold prayers in the (Mecca) Masjid but not inside the Charminar. The top cop was overseeing the situation along with other senior police officers and about 300 police personnel.

A large number of people had assembled in the Masjid for the Friday prayers and some of them reportedly tried to remove the barricade and enter the Charminar. With the police resisting, the entire area turned into a battleground within minutes.
