A popular hospital in Bangalore, the Victoria hospital has made some startling claims in the aftermath of Baby Afreen’s death when it said that it had conducted autopsies on 33 infants who were found dumped in public places like dustbins and roadsides, including those born prematurely. This statistic was for 2011 alone. According to the hospital, among the 33, 14 were female babies and 15 male children.
A doctor at Victoria hospital has been quoted as saying, “The sexuality of the rest four could not be identified because the bodies were mauled. Some of the infants were prematurely born with the placenta and umbilical cord intact and dumped.”
The same hospital also has reported that an infant was found dead on Mar 20 after it was abandoned by her mother in front of Janata Bazaar near Victoria Hospital. The police officer stated, “The baby was wrapped in cloth. She was found dead by a passersby, who alerted the beat constables. A case was registered under Sec. 318 of IPC (concealment of birth by secret disposal of body) and handed over the body to the hospital mortuary.”
2012 also saw three cases of newborns being dumped that included a boy as well in Bangalore.
