Telangana
Hyderabad, Feb 29: The Congress-led UPA government is planning to constitute a Telangana Development Council with special powers and funds for rapid development of the Telangana region instead of formation of a separate Telangana state.

Sources said that the Centre is likely to announce their move to form a Telangana Development council after the by-election to seven seats including six in Telangana, scheduled to be held on Mar 18.

Moreover, there will be a regional council for political empowerment and social and economic development for the Telangana region. The proposed development council is likely to go in the lines of the Darjeeling Development Council.

The pro-Telangana organisations, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) are all set to oppose this proposal and fight back for creation of a Telangana state.

Reacting to the centre's move, Bharatiya Janata Party said that Congress is trying to dilute the contentious issue by forming a Telangana Development Council instead of fulfilling the age old demands of Telangana people.

The party also demanded that the government should table the Telangana Bill in the ongoing budget session of the Assembly.
