Mullaperiyar row: Jayalalithaa vents anger in letter to PM

Jayalalithaa
Chennai, Feb 9: Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa vented out her anger in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the Mullaperiyar issue asking him to stop any activity at the dam that violates the rights of Tamil Nadu.

Jayalalithaa in her complaint alleged the Kerala government of trying to install a water built-up monitoring system to keep a watch on water levels and said that the centre also accepted the move.

"Any unilateral action without Tamil Nadu's consent is against federalism," said Jayalalithaa.

The Mullaperiyar issue has long been the cause of rift between neighbouring states Kerala and Tamil Nadu. While Kerala remains adamant that the dam poses threat to thousands of lives situated across the area, as it is prone to earthquakes, Tamil Nadu has remained defiant over the stand that it does not advocate the construction of a new dam as appealed by Kerala. Tamil Nadu also lashed out at Kerala by slamming the state for evoking unnecessary fear among people as the state believes that the dam is absolutely safe.

While Tamil Nadu wants to increase the water level of the dam, Kerala fears that the dam would collapse, as it is fragile in structure, as claimed by the state.
