TN politics: Cong, UPA dump DMK; approach Jayalalithaa?

Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi
Chennai, Jan 30: It seems that DMK's alliance with UPA is in trouble as media reports suggested that the central government of India led by Congress may soon approve a proposal made by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. If the central government nods to Jayalalithaa's proposal, then it's quite evident that DMK will be upset with the move.

The news started doing the rounds when the Union Law and Justice Minister, Salman Khurshid recently met a delegation of AIADMK MPs led by Dr V Maitreyan to discuss the issue where AIADMK has been objecting the reverting of Tamil Nadu Legislative Council Act, 2010.

Here it can be mentioned that DMK, during its tenure in the state, had decided to make the state legislature bicameral. But after grabbing the power and charge from Karunanidhi in 2011, Jayalalithaa made it clear that she will not support the proposal of reviving the legislative council act.

The legislative council in Tamil Nadu was first abolished by the AIADMK government led by MG Ramachandran in 1986.
